Assignment 1 – Project Brief
Assignment 1 required candidates to form groups or teams and prepare a project brief for the CH2 Project in the Melbourne CBD. As this is already an existing building, students had to prepare a brief based upon specific information that could be found about the building itself.
Heating and Cooling
Another important aspect is the heating and cooling of the building. The desired temperature of the office space is between 21-23 degrees. To achieve these desired conditions the following can be raised:
Heating
Overall the Heating required should be minimal will because of the heat produced from people, office equipment and lighting. Even in the colder months of winter It is expected that cooling will be required to maintain the desired thermal comfort level. There will however be some occasions including early mornings before everything is going and minimal people at work where heating will be required. The heating is to be produced by a traditional natural gas boiler, Recycled waste heat from co-generation plant
Cooling
Cooling for the building will be generally required all year round however in winter on cold days it may not be needed especially in the mornings. Cooling of a building has the potential to use a lot of energy, therefore it is important to use as many ‘natural’ cooling techniques as possible, such as night purging. Some cooling techniques include things such as,Chilled ceilings and beams, A phase change material (PCM) thermal store, Shower towers, Cooling towers, Absorption and electric chillers, A night purging process to cool the thermal mass, Under-.floor ventilation
The goal is to improve working conditions which in turn creates a better morale and attitude; this can be done through having a high level of indoor air quality and an emphasis on sustainability that clearly demonstrates a commitment to workers health and the environment. By sticking to these criteria it is expected that there will be a 4.9% increase in staff effectiveness through reduced sick leave, and with the increase morale of workers this can add to a possible saving of over $1 million a year.
